How do app blockers work on iPhone?
Third-party app blockers on iPhone use Apple's Screen Time frameworks. You grant permission, choose apps with Apple's private picker, and iOS shows a shield over those apps when your rules say so. The blocker never sees which apps you picked by name. It receives anonymous tokens.
The three Apple frameworks behind it
- Family Controls asks for Screen Time permission and shows Apple's app picker. Apps receive opaque tokens, not app names or your browsing.
- Device Activity lets the app schedule monitoring, for example "tell me when these apps reach 60 minutes today", even when the app is closed.
- Managed Settings applies and removes the shield that covers the selected apps, categories and websites.
Can an app block social media on iPhone?
Yes. Once you grant Screen Time permission and select social apps or the Social category, an app blocker can shield them after a time limit or during a schedule. You'll see a shield screen instead of the app.
Honest limits
- For an adult managing their own phone, permission can be withdrawn in Settings and the app can be deleted. A blocker is a commitment tool, not a lock.
- Stronger restrictions for a child's device use Apple's Family Sharing and Screen Time set up by the parent organizer.
- An app's shields cannot override limits set in iOS Settings or by a Family Sharing organizer, and vice versa.
